Preparation of Barium chloride, 0.48 mol/l (10% w/v) for Bilirubin test in urine

Reagent:

To make 500 ml:

Barium chloride ………………………………………. 50 g

Distilled water …………………………………. to 500 ml


Method:

1) Weigh the barium chloride and transfer it to a 500 ml volumetric flask.

Caution: Barium chloride is a poisonous chemical which is injurious to health when inhaled or swallowed.

2) Half fill the flask with water and mix to dissolve the chemical.

3) Make up to the 500 ml mark with water and mix well.

4) Transfer to a leak-proof bottle. Label the bottle and mark it Toxic.

Store at room temperature. The reagent is stable for several months.
